Dakota Prairie Commons Members

Betty Smith

Born and raised in New York City, I moved to Vermillion in 1999 after 30 years in Connecticut to join the University of South Dakota’s Political Science Department. I was drawn to the historic downtown, the Missouri River, and a vibrant community where I’ve helped create Leadership Vermillion, chaired the Clay County Historic Preservation Commission, and co-founded the Vermillion Cultural Association. My favorite part of living here is the friendships and shared activities, from game nights and music performances to kayaking and hiking.

After retiring eight years ago to care for my husband, I began painting with the Missouri River Watercolor Society. Now, as I prepare to retire as Chair of the Clay County Commission, I’m excited to focus on cohousing projects and spending time with my three children and six grandchildren.

Lana Svien

Born and raised in Minnesota near “Lake Wobegon,” I’ve loved the Vermillion community for over 40 years. I first came here for graduate school, then left briefly to teach at Georgetown University, but quickly returned to USD and the place I call “home.” Vermillion’s human scale and lively events—music, sports, art, lectures, and outdoor activities—ensure there’s always something to enjoy.

I have two talented grown children, four amazing grandchildren, and an extraordinary Cockapoo named Bella. I’m an Ayurvedic Health Counsellor and teach online for a school in Bali. Summers are spent at my family lake cabin in Minnesota, gardening, practicing yoga, reading, traveling, hiking, and kayaking. Being part of Dakota Prairie Commons aligns perfectly with my values.

Susanne Skyrm

I grew up in Idaho and moved frequently for education and career, including eight years in Milan, Italy. I settled in Vermillion in 1988 to teach piano and fortepiano at USD, retiring in 2016. Retirement has allowed me to explore my passions for traveling, photography, scuba diving, hiking, and volunteering for environmental and political causes. My latest adventure is a dive trip to Indonesia for an underwater photography workshop!

Vermillion offers countless ways to get involved. I chair the local Sierra Club, serve as Treasurer for the state chapter, and am Vice-President of the League of Women Voters. I’m drawn to cohousing for its environmental sustainability and as a meaningful way to forge connections and age in place.

Becky Rider

Growing up in an Air Force family as the oldest of four, I lived along the Rocky Mountains, spending my best years in Colorado Springs and Boulder. I loved exploring, hiking, camping, skiing, and riding horses and bikes with friends and family. After college, I lived near Omaha before settling in Vermillion in 1990.

I recently retired from a 37-year career as a public school band director but still enjoy making music and attending live performances. I also love outdoor activities like geocaching, hiking, traveling, or simply reading on the patio. Cooking, baking, and savoring good food are favorite pastimes. Though I’m an introvert, I’m excited about aging in a sustainable cohousing community filled with supportive, inspiring people.

Diane Leja

I am a septuagenarian who has called Vermillion home since 1989, witnessing its growth and evolution over the years. My two adult children, VHS graduates, have built successful careers in other states with their spouses. I feel fortunate to still have both of my parents, now in their late 90s, who remain healthy, curious, and excited about the cohousing project.

At home, I enjoy reading, knitting, and caring for my succulent collection. I’m active at the nearby UCC church, where I participate in various activities, including playing in the bell choir. My spouse Becky and I love experimenting in the kitchen, always on the lookout for interesting new recipes. We are also avid geocachers and travel as much as possible.

Helping bring Dakota Prairie Commons to life is a rewarding experience. I am eager to live in a community where like-minded people support one another and share in the joys of everyday life.

Sandy McKeown

I’ve spent most of my life in South Dakota, growing up in Rapid City and later attending the University of South Dakota for both undergraduate and law school. After a brief period practicing law, I found my calling in the Political Science Department at the University, where I now teach undergraduate courses on criminal and constitutional law.

My daughter, Ashley, is a teacher living in South Korea, where she teaches Spanish and performs as an aerial and burlesque artist.

I’ve enjoyed living in Vermillion, where I walk or bike nearly everywhere and participate in the vibrant arts, sporting, and academic events offered by our university and community. Vermillion has also been the perfect launching pad for my passion for travel.

Cohousing excites me as it provides a way to intentionally build community while respecting my introverted nature. I look forward to finding a travel buddy in our new cohousing community!
